In the September issue of Empire magazine, the 62-year-old Neeson reveals he was excited to bring to life a main character similar to one played many times by his favorite veteran actor. The $25 million production rather quickly disappeared from theaters. The gritty film, directed by the talented Scott Frank (2007’s “The Lookout”) and set in 1999, had a modest global gross of $53.1 million after its Sept. Unlike the quip-driven cops played by Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson in “Die Hard” and “Lethal Weapon,” respectively, Scudder is a throwback and a dramatically complicated character in “A Walk Among the Tombstones” ($29.99, DVD $39.99, Blu-ray Disc). He becomes a haunted private eye and is hired by a drug dealer to use any means necessary to find the murderers of the man’s wife. In the R-rated drama arriving on home video Tuesday and based on Lawrence Block’s 1992 crime novel, Neeson plays Matt Scudder, a former New York City detective who’s a recovering alcoholic and left the force after a tragic accident while under the influence. Liam Neeson, who explored the flashy aspects of being a cinematic lethal weapon in the fabulously successful “Taken” franchise, follows a similar path but mirrors a much darker tone in “A Walk Among the Tombstones.”
